THROWBACK THURSDAYS ( 1 OF I DUNNO )
WHAT CHINA TAUGHT ME
Hey Athletes, you need to be studying film
Here’s why
Film don’t lie
Film don’t lie
Film don’t lie
No seriously i mean it, and that’s what China taught me
Side note I was in Beijing, China to train basketball players, this was where a theory of mine was tested
So let’s get to the story, the short version at least.
I was a wee lad that got blessed with the opportunity to work for one of the top 3 agents in China for the CBA, my job was to train imports( don’t get mad at me, this is what they called them ) and locals the game of basketball.
Imports - someone not from the country looking to play in the CBA which is the Chinese basketball association, its in China. They range from graduating collegiate hoopers, ex nba guys, pros from other leagues you name it
Now i would like to think of myself as a good coach, and one of the qualities that aide in that is
Honesty
This allowed me to look at myself and figure out how can I be of value, now I had already been big on watching film, but once I realized it was an important tool in speaking to all expertise levels in a specific field it was a light bulb moment. It doesn’t speak to what I do as a player or what you are going to do as a player or athlete it speaks to the current and objective truth. The film doesn’t lie. If it’s wrong on film, you did it wrong, and that’s ok, as a matter of fact it’s better than ok, because if you can see it, it can be fixed.
I was able to explain things to pros who were and are more experienced than me in an efficient way, no arguments, just questions and answers and I loved it.
This was in 2014 and I have been practicing and improving this craft since
