How did we get here…

In the beginning…

The year is 2014 and I’m on a flight to Beijing, China.

Wait, what? Let’s rewind, why am I flight to China?

With this back story we are skipping ahead, however the expected life plan I had for myself has come to an end, I am no longer pursuing a basketball career, and have leaned into more of my purpose, Teaching. Basketball player development is my first stop and I got pretty damn good, fast. With that being said I am presented with an opportunity to work in Beijing doing just that. Training Professionals and Amatuers in that field. Little did I know it would start a dominoe effect into soo much more.

THE MORE

Couple months in to the job the strength and conditioning coach is forced to go home, unfortunately his mom gets sick, so I am asked to step up to plate. Me thinking I am a little more important than I am asked to get paid more, When I tell you reality of that falsehood hit me so fast I couldnt help but stutter in my response. “W-W-Wait, ca-ca-can I give you the answer tomorrow morning?”. What was told to me to warrant that response was simple, “I can send you home Sunday”. What I did with that time to make the decision was what any sane person would do. I called my mom, via Skype ( it’s 2014, Skype was our form of video calling then ) what she told me kept those dominoes falling in a direction that led me to the present. “Casey, you don’t know what this can turn into, you are already there just do it”

I FELL IN LOVE

I fell in love with strength and conditioning, specifically athletic strength & conditioning, and like basketball player development I got really good, really fast. I was able to learn and apply almost simeatanouesly and I created a burden of proof for this new found skill. Did I forget to mention I was out of shape when I arrived in China?

OOPs

Yea I was OUT of shape to say the least, had my first daughter, her mom was pregnant, I got pregnant too, yea all bad, no I will not be showing before photos, because yea, no. The important part of this, is nutrition and strength & conditioning go hand in hand, so another skill I focused on and applied was that. I got into the best shape of my life, physically and mentally, and came back a whole new person, Literally.

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I GOT BACK

Before I left to China, there weren’t too many people doing what I did locally (basketball training), but when I got back there was a basketball trainer on EVERY corner, however not too many athletic strength & conditioning coaches. Thanks Mom, that advice kicked in almost immediately. Now not only am I training basketball skills, I’m teaching them strength & conditioning, and I am able to do personal training and nutrition.

WHERE DOES BOXING COME IN?

Let’s rewind again, I started boxing when I was 17, my senior year we didn’t make CIF for basketball. I had always liked fighting and wanted to learn how to do it against others who did as well in a competitive fashion, so immediately after my exit meeting with my basketball coach I walked to the local boxing gym in Tustin, OC Boxing, and you guessed it, fell in love. I lived in that gym for a solid 2 years and loved every second of it, but then my first love came a knocking, basketball, and I had to give it another shot. Torn ACL later, not taking rehab seriously, couple pro camps, you know the common ex athlete story it didn’t workout, not without learning though. I realized i was in love with the game of basketball, just not playing it. Ok sob story over, now lets put all of this experience together and wrap this origin story up, somewhat…

I NEVER THOUGHT OF BEING A BOXING COACH

I wanted to do strength and conditioning for boxers and the plan was, hit up my old coach he does the coaching and I do the strength and conditioning for boxing. Another slice of humble pie, different scenario ultimately same result as the first one in 2014, same mom advice implemented. Let’s bullet point how it played out.

I was told i couldn’t do it because i had never done it.

I said fuck all that and said not only will i do the strength and conditioning i will also do the coaching

SO HERE WE ARE

I now coach basketball, boxing, athletic strength and conditioning, personal training, and nutrition.
